Is your business compliant in handling and storing the personal information of others?

By now, every South African has heard of the POPI Act, its compliance demands from 1 July 2021, and the consequences if not complied with – such as fines of R10 million and/or imprisonment.

South African businesses are currently working hard to rebuild the economy after our third wave of COVID-19 and (understandably) compliance with such a significant law as POPI is pushed to the end of the ‘to-do’ list. This is obviously not advised as non-compliance with the POPI Act can have dire consequences for your business.

To touch on a few preliminary points, your business is obliged to:

  • Appoint information officers
  • Develop data protection policies and privacy policies
  • Train your staff and develop processes to ensure compliance
  • Disclose to those whose data is being stored and/or processed

Before the regulator or a civil court case knocks on your door, get the legal advice your business requires in order to be compliant as soon as possible.
